Stephan Vanfleteren was born in Kortrijk in 1969. He studied photography at the Institut Saint-Luc in Brussels from 1988 to 1992. He had never owned a camera before. But he is dyslexic and traditional teaching is very difficult for him. He says that after eliminating all professions, all he could do was photograph. But photography also required a lot of work from him 1 .

In 1993, while waiting to do his military service , he traveled to New York where he mainly practiced street photography . "New York was important", he writes, "It was my ticket to the professional world".

He is married to Natacha Hofman, “his muse but also his harshest critic”. They live in Veurne with their three sons.
